The “Friends of the Art Park Players” (FOTAPP) volunteer group is a nonprofit organization that exists for charitable and educational purposes, including the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our mailing address is P.O. Box 2134, Deer Park, Texas 77536.

The purpose of the “Friends of the Art Park Players” volunteer group is to enhance and support the ultimate theatre educational experience for both adults and children of all ages. This organization will support every aspect of the Fine Art of Theatre production such as acting, enunciation, vocal performance, development of creative imagination, stage direction, facial and vocal expression, choreography, vocal projection, body language, team work, active listening skills, theatre discipline and etiquette, technical theatre, commercial training, public speaking, modeling, and how to select an agent. This organization will also assist in developing a closer connection between the Theatre staff and home by encouraging adult/parent involvement to improve the environment at the City of Deer Park’s Art Park Players Theatre program through volunteerism and financial support.

We hope you find this website useful to you and your family. We love our volunteers and know, without a doubt, that the Theatre could not be the great Theatre it is without all of our volunteers’ hard work and efforts! We truly appreciate all you do for our Theatre family. If you would like to “get involved” through volunteering at the Theatre, please check out our Get Involved page and contact Faylene Defrancis at 832-452-9546.

The Early Days . . .

In early 1979, a small group of Deer Park residents, led by Jeff Smith and Jean Riggs, met at the Deer Park Community Center to begin a script-reading club. After several weeks went by and the number of people attending grew, this hardworking and talented group decided it was time to put on a show. Later that year they staged their very first production, Once Upon A Mattress at Deer Park High School’s Gaines Mason Auditorium.

These theatre lovers continued their recruitment efforts and soon the “Not-Yet-Named Theatre Company” sprang to life, offering their first season of shows. The City of Deer Park recognized the love for the theatrical arts in our community, and was fortunate to hire Sue Fenley Meyers as the full-time Artistic and Managing Supervisor. And the “Not-Yet-Named Theatre Company” became the Art Park Players.

Present Day . . .

It has been a long but exciting journey from our humble beginnings back in “Room 6” at the Community Center to the lovely theatre facility the City of Deer Park afforded us in December of 1986. In April, 2004, Susan Mele, longtime theatre performer, Jr. Art Park Player Director and Volunteer, took over the reins upon Sue’s retirement. Susan has been with the theatre company since 1981.

Growing Numbers

Art Park Players have grown in both number and spirit. Our pride in our theatrical endeavors knows no bounds. We are blessed to have a successful company run by our theatre family. Our success relies heavily on the efforts of more than 100 steadfast volunteers who are instrumental in helping us present more than 10 productions to the community each year – including our highly acclaimed dinner theatre shows.

Youth Theatre School

Our youth theatre school began with 6 students and now has more than 250 eager young minds. These students gain self-confidence and grow their creativity through participation in a myriad of activities:

Dance classes
Modeling classes
Musical productions
Plays
Student-directed shows
Voice classes
And more . . .

The Audience's Role

As we enter our 37th Season, all of the players want to thank you, our audience, for your continued support. Many of you have been with us since those early days, and have shared in our success. We know you celebrate with us as we reflect on the past 37 years.
